It is easy to configure. This is a very handy card to help me stay connected to the internet on my Axim X5. I wished that it would automatically connect to available networks instead of having to type them in though.
I had to:1) Open the package2) Power up the Zaurus 5500 (V3.10 ROM)3) Plug in the Linksys card4) Configure the network connection5) Surf the net and get emailI wish everything in life was this difficult. It constantly indicates a higher quality signal strength than the built in wireless card in my Sharp SL6000 in any given location.
So, sure I'd buy another for my Zaurus anytime. The 5500's aren't known for their battery reserves anyway.
I'm not sure how I'd rate power consumption as this is the first and only wireless card I've got for my 5500. It doesn't block the stylus port either which is a big plus.
This card was very difficult to install. :) The WCF12 seems to have very good range.
About 45 minutes of surfing and it's time for a recharge.
The card took some playing around with but once I got all the software installed it worked ok. I just have to play around with the internet settings to get it to work.
Thanks to Linksys for a product that finally works. The power on the card turns off as it should whenever the PDA goes into standby, and 'wakes up' again when the PDA is turned on, all quite naturally. So far there has not been a single glitch. Even with "Super Saver" free shipping, I got the item delivered to my New York apartment in less than 36 hours of ordering, eight days before the estimated arrival (shocking, catches you off guard, doesn't it). The connection speed is great, and pages load up surprisingly fast (even heavier ones, like Yahoo mail, have exceeded my expectation). Sandisk had blamed it all on "Windows Pocket PC 2003 Second Edition", which they had not guaranteed compatibility with.
Neither had Linksys, but their card had no problem with the operating system. Unlike those here that the Wi-Fi card didn't work for, I had a great experience. The available Wi-Fi networks were detected seamlessly as soon as the card was plugged in. I had tried a Sandisk Wi-Fi card prior to this, with disastrous results (apparently Sandisk is getting out of the Wi-Fi business altogether). I have an HP iPaq 2110, with Windows Pocket PC 2003 SE. First, kudos to Amazon's super speed.
The Linksys card worked right out of the box, with the software on the CD that was provided (i.e., I did not even need to go to their website to get the latest installation software). I could not get my PDA to recognize the card after it went into standby, and in general, connectivity was very erratic, and I had to send it back.
Reading a review about the WCF12 and a Zaurus 5500 from user on Amazon almost kept me from buying this device, but then I found a useful tidbit of information. As long as you have updated the Zaurus' ROM, the WCF12 will work right out of the box.
